Walton MP Steve Rotheram has written to the Culture Secretary Maria Miller following a response to a question on the future of Liverpool City Council’s finances from Brandon Lewis MP. Yesterday, Lewis suggested to Steve that Liverpool should look a cutting the culture budget further.

Rotheram, who was Lord Mayor of Liverpool in 2008 during the City’s year as the European Capital of Culture explained in his letter to the Secretary of State, “Culture and creativity are part of Liverpool’s historic identity. What is more, our local politicians (myself included) are adamant that they will be at the heart of our regeneration. I’m not prepared for this to be jeopardised further or for Government to be sending mixed messages about Liverpool’s future cultural offer.

“I would therefore appreciate your immediate clarification on whether the advice given by Brandon Lewis MP to cult our cultural budget and programme is the policy of your Government and what impact assessment you have undertaken on the effect of this advice to regional arts organisations and projects.

“This is an extremely important matter and if it transpires that Mr Lewis was not speaking for the Government on this issue then the record must be corrected at the earliest opportunity”.
