Steve's visit to Alsop High School for Hillsborough themed Mother’s Day assembly(March 28, 2014)
Walton MP Steve Rotheram today visited Alsop High School in his constituency to join the students in a special Hillsborough themed Mother’s Day assembly, which included a poignant tribute to the late Anne Williams, a tireless campaigner for the victims of the Hillsborough Disaster.
Following a number of moving video clips featured in the assembly, Steve also addressed the pupils to give his account of Hillsborough and the role he has played in the fight for justice for the 96 innocent men, women and children who sadly lost their lives on that fateful day.
During his visit Steve also awarded a group of Sixth Form students with certificates for their participation in a lesson discussing the human impact of the Hillsborough Tragedy, which was recorded and due to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4.
Talking of the event Steve said “I think it is important that the younger generation are educated on the Hillsborough Tragedy and the significant impact it had on our city. Many of the students today will have family members who have been directly affected by the events in 1989.
It was fitting, also, to tie in the Mothers Day element and reflect on the importance of family and family values.
I would like to thank the all the teachers and students from Alsop High School who organised and attended the assembly, and furthermore congratulate the sixth-formers who took part in the discussion.”
